As a J-1 visa sponsor, Greenheart’s Work Travel program enables people from all over the world to work in various seasonal positions across the United States for up to four months. Our participants are placed in industries including hotels, amusement parks, restaurants, and so much more- all with the goal of facilitating cultural exchange between all parties involved. For two summers in a row, one of our participants, Shiny, from Mongolia, worked in Wisconsin and personally encountered the benefits of working abroad and connecting with people from a different culture. Here’s Shiny reflecting on her time spent in our Work Travel Program!
“In 2021, I participated in the Work Travel program, facilitated by United World as my agency and Greenheart as my sponsor organization. This experience occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I consider myself fortunate to have participated, particularly given that there were only two days of the Open Window for applications. I completed my application and introduction video in one day, and my agency successfully connected me with an employer the following day.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, both Greenheart and United World effectively supported my search for employment, resulting in my placement at Pheasant Park Condo Association in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, where I worked as a housekeeper. This opportunity allowed me to gain invaluable insights and experiences while working and traveling in the United States.
During my tenure, I encountered various cultural nuances and workplace dynamics that were initially challenging to navigate. However, the unwavering support from my sponsor, Greenheart, and my agency, United World, greatly facilitated my adaptation. Their accessibility and assistance were instrumental to my success.
In 2022, I chose to participate in the Work and Travel program once again, returning to the same location and employer. My positive experiences in Door County, particularly in Sister Bay, as well as my admiration for my employer, motivated this decision.
That same year, I graduated from university and sought to deepen my understanding of American culture through participation in the Camp Counselor program in the U.S. This role provided a distinctly different experience, as I worked with children and was responsible for their well-being around the clock. I served at Camp OTX in Bandera, Texas, and I cherished every moment spent at the camp.
Participating in this cultural program broadened my horizons, enabling me to enjoy travel, meet new people, and forge international friendships. I am grateful for the expertise and guidance offered by my sponsors and agency throughout these experiences.
I confidently assert that I am among the luckiest participants in the Work and Travel program. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Greenheart and United World for their support.” – Shinesaran “Shiny” Ulziibayar
