Wow, sorry it’s been so long—it’s just been pretty hectic here during my summer language camp in Salamanca, so I haven’t had much time to write. So let’s see…what have I been up to? Well, every Saturday, the school goes on an excursion. Last Saturday we went to a town an hour and a half away called Alberca. This week we went to a different town called Ávila.
In Alberca, we went to visit a very small extra virgin olive oil factory. But, factory isn’t quite the right word—the “factory” consisted of 4 employees and just a few machines. It was really quite interesting, because this company is very small and only sells their oil out of their one location right outside of Alberca. The oil is also “gourmet” and not used for cooking, but instead, to put on bread, salad, or pasta. After seeing the factory, we drove a bit more and just went and walked around Alberca for a small while.
This past Saturday we visited Ávila. Ávila is a pretty important town here—from the information I’ve gathered, Saint Teresa was born and raised in Ávila, and lived there up until her death…but I could be wrong—there’s a chance it was lost in translation. Anyway, all we really did while there was walk around, visit the numerous cathedrals, and learn a ton about Saint Teresa. The town is mostly a 16th century town, and is surrounded by medieval walls. These walls, which are of Romanesque architecture, have pathways along the top of them that tourists may walk. So, some of the kids from school and I walked the path. It wasn’t very long—we were told that it would be an hour long walk, but it only took 25 minutes—but it was beautiful to see the entire town from so high up. This upcoming Saturday we are going to Segovia, which I’m very excited about…so, I’ll write again then!
