Taxback.com Donates $5,000 to Greenheart for Intercultural Education and Volunteerism
By: Mary Teeter, Director of Development
The Greenheart Club was recently honored to receive a generous $5,000 donation from taxback.com, a multi-national corporation of tax specialists – to provide travel scholarship opportunities to Academic Year Program Greenheart Club members.
Throughout the year, Greenheart organizes trips to different corners of the United States for high school exchange students. These excursions are a mix of volunteerism and tourism, and international students have the opportunity to meet fellow exchange students, share their energies in service projects and learn more about their host country’s geography and culture. In 2012-13, Greenheart Trips include: Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Southern California, Hawaii, Florida Everglades – and in June, with taxback.com’s support: Washington, DC and New York City.
In 2013, taxback.com’s main focus for charitable donations is directed towards the theme of ‘Play’. The company has been helping children throughout the world to participate in activities such as art, drama, sport and music – and coming soon for Greenheart: intercultural education. Each year, taxback.com donates approximately €70,000 (more than $90,000) to their offices’ local communities.
Greenheart caught up with taxback.com’s Vice President of Business Development in Ireland, Aoife Flynn, to say, “Thank you!” and discuss taxback.com’s incredible business and corporate social responsibility program.
1. Tell us about taxback.com. What makes taxback.com unique?
Constantly improving services and looking for new opportunities in an ever-changing environment has helped taxback.com to adapt and stay at the top of the international tax and financial services market. Our young and international staff, located in 20 countries around the world, is the vital and unique ingredient to our dynamic and forward-thinking edge and brings energy and vitality to everything we do.
2. Taxback.com works internationally, and cares deeply about the communities in which its employees live and work. How does the company get involved and support those communities each year?
From the outset of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in 2007, it was agreed that our contribution to those in need would not be merely monetary. We wanted to roll up our sleeves and physically take part in the initiatives that we support. So, along with providing financial support to deserving charities and groups around the world, taxback.com staff have been actively involved in distributing supplies to flood victims, in building multi-sensory gardens for children with special needs, in organizing a ‘meet and greet’ day out with CanTeen members, the charity which provides support to children living with cancer. Our support has spanned Brazil, Haiti, Peru, Ireland, Australia, Bulgaria and Romania.
3. What inspired taxback.com to support the Greenheart Club Trips?
Taxback.com’s future plans for Corporate Social Responsibility encompass intercultural education. The ethos behind the Greenheart Club Trips, which connect international students via environmental volunteer opportunities across a global platform, is closely tied to the future direction of taxback.com’s plans for CSR development, so this is the perfect opportunity to engage with a program that is close to the heart of the taxback.com CSR program.
4. What vision does taxback.com have for the future that we can all support today?
Our CSR activity is ongoing and we have devised a rolling program with a global reach for the coming years, to tie in with our global reach business strategy. The US is the next location to fall under the CSR spotlight. We’re currently in talks about an educational initiative that will connect young people from contrasting cultures. This is in planning stages but will be formally launched at the end of the year. We’ll also be rolling out a brand new initiative in Australia.
5. (And for fun): Tell us three surprising things about taxback.com and its employees.
With such a young, diverse and international team as ours, it’s not too surprising that a large number of international languages are spoken by our employees. However, it may surprise you to know that more than 25 languages can be heard throughout our global offices. Languages as diverse as Norwegian, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew and Thai, along with more commonly heard European languages, make for colorful background noise in our international offices.
How far would we go for excitement? Well, not many people would be willing to jump out of a plane to get their kicks, but earlier this year, one of our Group Directors, along with another staff member, did just that. All in the name of charity! The Aislinn Centre, which is a twelve-bedded drug free residential centre for adolescents, was the beneficiary of this brave and fearless act.
And here’s one more interesting thing that you didn’t know about taxback.com. The founder of taxback.com, who has been the recipient of the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, established taxback.com in the humble surroundings of his kitchen while he was still a student at university. His first employee was his own mum, who helped him out as the business started to expand. Taxback.com, as an employer of more than 730 people across twenty countries today, has clearly out-grown its inauspicious beginnings. Taxback.com – from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow.
