New Greenheart pins made in China are fair trade, use recycled materials
By Rob Cogdell, Designer, Greenheart
At Greenheart we recently ordered new pins and couldn’t be more excited about them! In sending them out, we wanted to address any concerns over the “Made in China” stickers found on the bags carrying the pins.
Our previous pins weren’t recyclable and in working with a vendor, we wanted to maintain the integrity of Greenheart and assure they were recyclable and fair trade. In our search we found some vendors and manufacturers that upheld one of our goals, but not the other – we remain firmly committed to both. Through our vendor, Peak Incentives, we were able to find a manufacturer in China who uses recyclable materials and is transparent in its labor practices. Here are few highlights from their audit through Asia Inspection:
Workers are paid 16,000 percent more than the local legal requirement RMB per month.
Based on the sampled payrolls provided by the factory, OT compensation was paid to workers at the rate of 150 percent. (Workers only worked overtime on weekdays)
No findings of gender, race, age, national, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or family responsibility discrimination.
Factory includes extinguishers, evaluation plan, fire drill records, fire alarm, two certified first aiders, first aid kits, agreement with local hospital to provide medical service.
For customs we had to place a country of origin on either the pins or the bags. Although we’re proud to have found our manufacturer, we’re aware of the stigma and often-unfair labor conditions associated with “Made in China” labels, and decided to put the sticker on the bag. This is just one case that highlights that not everything with a “Made in China” label is bad as long as you put in the research and stay true to yourself.
So when we wear our pins, we can wear them with pride and appreciation towards the Chinese manufacturer who created them for us.
