Greenheart Goes Greener with New Composting Program
Connecting People and Planet: It’s the core of what we do here at Greenheart International. This spring, we’re taking that a step further by partnering with The Urban Canopy to begin our in-office composting program!
As part of The Urban Canopy’s Compost Club, Greenheart’s Chicago offices are engaged in a program that includes a sealed bucket in the kitchen of each of our eight floors. The Urban Canopy then collects the composted material for use in nutrient-rich soil at their two-acre Englewood farm. You’ve probably seen some of their produce at local farmers markets!
Composting initiatives encourage the diversion of organic waste away from landfills, reducing our carbon footprint and enabling us to reuse this material in new soil. This is extremely important as we prepare for the effects of climate change on our environment. Currently, most food waste ends up in landfills, which represents a large part of municipal waste, according to the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations. However, programs such as these are offering urban residents and businesses an opportunity to reduce waste while encouraging locally-focused urban farming.
This isn’t the only way we’re living out our mission here in our Chicago offices! Since summer 2016, we’ve sourced our famous Greenheart pins from vendors who practice fair trade and use recycled materials. We are proud to be living our vision of a more socially-conscious world, both internationally and locally.
