Did Greenheart really create a department with a bird acronym?
By Andrea Dennis, Director of DOVE
Why yes, yes we did.
Imagine this. Ten years ago Greenheart had less than thirty staff, two offices and zero conference rooms. Staff meetings took place casually in an office floor where we herded our office chairs in a circle, and the CEO and President used empty desks when they were working in Chicago. Flash forward to present moment. Greenheart has one hundred and forty employees, four office buildings, five conference rooms, and has to rent a neighboring facility to house our staff meetings. Things have changed!
This rapid growth has prompted creative culture shifts in the organization that are unique to Greenheart. In addition to unifying as Greenheart International in 2013, we also added a development department, thus initiating an organizational shift into a culture of giving. We established a marketing team, grew our outreach programs, and you all know what it is like to keep up with social media engagement—never ending! To manage and direct these changes, we created a new department unique to Greenheart called—DOVE: Development, Outreach, Visibility, Engagement. We like the DOVE acronym for all the reasons you can imagine—association to peace, easy to remember, and above all it serves a very important purpose of actually illustrating all that DOVE does.
So in a real nutshell, what is the DOVE Department?
DOVE is a department of Greenheart International that serves Greenheart and its four branches—CCI Greenheart, Greenheart Travel, Greenheart Shop and Greenheart Transforms. DOVE is an acronym for the department’s main functions: Development, Outreach, Visibility, Engagement. DOVE is referred to as a department, but it mostly functions as micro-teams. This is an important distinction!
What are the micro-teams of DOVE?
D in DOVE—Development, or commonly referred to as fundraising, creates opportunities for Greenheart supporters to partner with us so that we can offer merit, need, and advocacy-based scholarships and programs to the Greenheart community.
O in DOVE—Outreach, or commonly referred to as Greenheart programming or the Greenheart Club, essentially manages and implements the funds raised by Development. Specifically, Outreach organizes staff volunteering, service learning Greenheart Grants, Camp Greenheart, Global Leaders Conference, and Jr. Global Leaders Conference. Outreach also manages the online support of the Greenheart Club.
V in DOVE—Visibility, or commonly referred to as marketing, engages in the art of bringing Greenheart and its branches to life through branding, print, and digital. Visibility handles all print and web requests, website projects, web development partners, digital advertising, and so much more!
E in DOVE—Engagement, manages the communications and social media efforts of Greenheart International for Development, Outreach and the collective presence of Greenheart International. This is no easy task as the engagement team coordinates with the social media campaigns of the four branches. There is a lot of information and stories to write and share in a meaningful way!
What are some of the projects DOVE undertakes as a department?
Each micro-team has its own strategic plan and project list, but there are some collaborative DOVE projects including: style guides, e-zines, impact reports, and gala.
What tools or systems does the DOVE department utilize?
The DOVE department works with all branches, thus in many ways we work with the systems of each branch. We have general knowledge of the CRMs, and communication systems of each branch. As much as possible, we aim to create systems that are universal to reduce unnecessary complexity. We use the project management tool Asana organization-wide, WuFoo forms for design & web requests, WordPress for websites, NEON as the CRM for Development, and are currently working with IT to determine a Digital Asset Management System for Greenheart.
What does DOVE do for team bonding?
We have bi-weekly meetings, a weekly farmer’s market salad “date” in the summer and crockpot “date” in the cooler months, and Friday prunes during which we clean and organize the office space. We welcome everyone to our floor and we delight when receiving invitations to better connect with the many colleagues we collaborate with at Greenheart.
