Shout out to our amazing Greenheart Camp Counselors!
Though the fireworks were spectacular in Chicago, there is no question that the highlight of the holiday weekend for me and Emanuel was visiting our scholarship campers at Camp Greenheart at YMCA’s Camp Duncan in northern Illinois. Forty-one bright-eyed, energetic kids ages 9 to 13 of all shapes and sizes spent five jam-packed days doing everything from archery to zip lining to crafts to wilderness survival, and then wound down each evening with yoga stretches followed by meditation sessions led by their cabin counselors.
The only ones more wonderful than the kids themselves were our phenomenal camp counselors – Marney Coleman, Lauren Metz, Andrea Dennis, Catherine Clare, Joe Dennis and Lucas Pearson, along with four junior counselors who were J-1 students on our high school program this year – Noah Reichl, Franzi Schicks and Rienhold Rosin from Germany and Huongie Nguyen from Vietnam. This amazing team served as coach, counselor, dance instructor, playmate, art teacher, choreographer, life guard, bunk mate, meal pal, sun block applier and tear wiper to name a few, all done with an enormous dose of good cheer, vibrancy and tender-loving care.
Thirteen-year old Miguel had no doubt that the highlight of his summer was being in nature and making new friends at Camp Greenheart, and said the only sad thing was having to go home and just “hang out” until school starts again this fall. The thing that will keep him smiling is that he can’t wait to go back next year as a counselor in training. Eleven-year old Tamara confided that while she really loved the dancing, she just might be a convert to meditation for life.
Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Greenheart was able to provide an unforgettable experience for the most deserving group of kids ever!
