Camp Greenheart Reunion!
By: Marney Coleman, Service Learning and Outreach Coordinator
This past summer, 27 students from across Chicago participated in Greenheart International’s first annual Camp Greenheart: a week-long summer camp focused on cultural exchange, environmental stewardship, personal development, and fun. In a survey taken after camp, campers across the board reported increases teamwork, affinity for nature, and friendship skills among other categories.
This past weekend, we had the opportunity to reconnect our campers in a Camp Greenheart Reunion! On a beautiful fall Saturday, 25 campers joined us at the Cooperation Operation urban garden in Pullman for a day filled with playing games, connecting with Camp friends, and exploring nature. Liz and Jared from the Cooperation Operation led our group on a tour of the site, and we even got to taste some of the food grown in the garden!
Afterwards, we made some nature-themed thank you cards for the Greenheart Advisory Board who helped us fundraise for Camp scholarships. Campers used plants, flowers and even soil (!) to make unique and thoughtful thank you notes. Next, the competition was on with a team scavenger hunt, where teams of campers had to find various items in the garden. Greenheart International’s own CEO Laura Rose helped break the tie by judging the best “Greenheart-shaped rock.” The Rockstar Bumblebee group took home some awesome Greenheart prizes!
After some group field games, hula hooping, and soccer, Liz led our group in a planting activity. Everyone was able to plant some sage to take home! Liz taught us what plants need to thrive and how to best care for them.
Finally, before we got back onto the bus we had some time to reflect on our experiences of the day and what it means to be a part of the Camp Greenheart family. Liz and Andrea led us in some group yoga as the sun was setting on what had been a beautiful fall day in Chicago.
We had such a fun day, but most importantly we got to see all of our friends from Camp Greenheart. We were so happy to be all together again! This reunion made us even more excited for Camp Greenheart 2015!
